Diabetic Foot Care in Windsor-Essex: What to Expect and Why Regular Visits Matter

If you live with diabetes, you have probably heard that your feet deserve extra attention. That can sound a little worrying, but it doesn't need to be. Regular, gentle foot care is one of the simplest ways to keep your feet comfortable and to catch small things before they become bigger ones.
Here's a plain-language look at what diabetic foot care involves, and how we support our neighbours across Windsor and Essex County.
Why feet need extra attention with diabetes
Over time, diabetes can affect two things in the feet: sensation and circulation. When feeling is reduced, a blister, a small cut or a sore spot can go unnoticed. When circulation is reduced, skin can take longer to heal.
None of this means problems are certain. It simply means a second set of trained eyes, on a regular schedule, is a good idea.
What a diabetic foot care visit involves
Every appointment is personal, but most visits include the following.
A sensation check (monofilament testing). A monofilament is a thin, soft nylon strand. We touch it lightly to different spots on your feet and ask whether you can feel it. It's quick, painless, and a helpful way to track how well your feet are sensing touch over time.
Nail care. Thick or overgrown nails can press on the skin and cause sore spots. We trim and smooth them safely, and we also care for thickened nails using professional podiatry burrs.
Callus and corn care. Calluses are areas of hardened skin that build up from pressure or friction. Left alone, they can become uncomfortable or crack. We gently reduce them so pressure is spread more evenly.
A skin check. We look over the tops, bottoms and in between your toes for dryness, cracks, redness, or changes in colour. Many of these are easy to manage when they're noticed early.
Education you can use. You will leave with practical tips on daily foot checks, moisturizing, socks and footwear. We share them verbally, in print and digitally, so you can go back to them whenever you like.
And yes, it's meant to be a nice experience. Our visits include a foot scrub, hot towels and a relaxing massage, which also supports circulation and healthy skin.

Why ongoing monitoring matters
One visit is helpful. A steady rhythm of visits is better.
Feet change slowly. A callus that is a little bigger than last time, or skin that looks a bit different, is easy to miss day to day but obvious to someone who has seen your feet before. Regular visits let us notice those gradual changes, talk them through with you, and suggest next steps, including a conversation with your doctor when that makes sense.
Seeing the same person each time makes a difference too. At Barefoot Kare, you aren't passed between practitioners. You build a relationship with one nurse who knows your feet, your history and your questions.
Who you will be seeing
Barefoot Kare is a founder-led practice. Our founder is a Registered Practical Nurse certified in basic and advanced foot care, and has been a foot care nurse since 2019. She opened Barefoot Kare in 2021 to offer something smaller and more personal than a large clinic: attentive, consistent care in a clean, comfortable setting.
Care that comes to you
Getting out the door isn't always easy. That's why we offer:
- Home visits for clients who prefer care in their own space
- Visits to long-term care and retirement homes across Windsor-Essex
Not sure whether visits can be arranged for you or a family member? Just ask. We're happy to talk it through.
Direct billing for eligible clients
For eligible diabetic clients receiving home care visits, we can direct bill Greenshield and Blue Cross, so there's less paperwork for you. We're working to add more insurance providers over time. If you're unsure about your coverage, contact us and we'll help you figure it out.
What it costs
A first visit for new clients includes a treatment and a personal care plan, takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and is $70. Returning client visits take about 30 to 40 minutes and are $55. We accept cash, debit, Mastercard, Visa and e-transfer.
